Introducing Soulday - A Spiritual Event on Oʿahu, Hawaiʿi

A couple of months ago I was talking with someone whom I had just met. I was talking about how I liked dancing and she told me about an event where they had ecstatic dance. We were supposed to go there together but then she couldn’t make it anymore, so I decided to go by myself. That decision may have been one of the best of my life because that is how I got introduced to Soulday. It turned out that the event was much more than just ecstatic dance! Soulday is a weekly spiritual event on the island of Oʿahu in Hawaiʿi.

When I first arrived, I was early and lost, but a man named Joshua immediately helped me and drove me onto the terrain. The land, the āina in Hawaiian, was absolutely beautiful and holds a magnificent energy. I ended up staying the whole day and even wanting to spend the night there as a volunteer. I had already made plans for the next day so I couldn’t but from then onwards my weekends were blocked: I would go to Soulday and stay for the weekend whenever I could.

The people that come here are from different backgrounds, in the sense of culture, age, and religious or spiritual background. I have learned more about different forms of Buddhism, Christianity, non-defined spiritual belief systems, and various spiritual practices. And I have had many inspiring conversations and gained beautiful friendships. The way that people found Soulday was amazing. It was not advertised a lot, so most people just stumbled upon it. One friend of mine for example, Emma, was just driving her moped and saw a sign next to the road so she went to check it out. She went pretty much every week since.

On the last Soulday on this land, this āina, a friend and I made a video to capture the experience. I hope this video gives you an idea of the energy on Soulday. For me the words love, peace and connection probably best convey my experience there. People looked me in the eyes, listened and talked with me with such an openness and understanding that in this space I have always felt completely safe and supported to discover and express my most authentic self.

This video means to give you an idea of what Soulday is, why it is organized and what it means for people that come there. I hope it gives you an insight into the vibe of Soulday and the community and that it inspires you in whatever way.

I am convinced that slow travel helps you connect with yourself, with the earth and with others in the most authentic and ethical way. But to do so, travel should not only be outwards, but also inward.
